Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structure of the nervous system and the nature of neural reception and transmission; an understanding of body response mechanisms, especially endocrine responses; and an understanding of the effects of ageing on body systems.
Synopsis The subject involves the study of the following topics: stimulus-response model; organisation of the nervous system; nature of nervous tissue; membrane potentials and action potentials; impulse transmission, synapses, integration; structure and function of the brain; structure and function of the spinal cord; nature of stimuli; characteristics of sense organs; diffuse senses and special senses; autonomic nervous system; nature of motor responses; disorders of the nervous system; nature of hormones and their activity; functions and malfunctions of the endocrine system; effects of ageing on the human body. The subject is taught by lectures, demonstrations and laboratory work.
