Objectives On completion of the subject, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the host-pathogen relationship in the disease process; the stages in the course of various types of infections; the causes of different types of nosocomial infections and their prevention and control; changing patterns in infectious diseases; and the collection and processing of microbiology specimens.
Synopsis The subject involves the study of the following topics: the general process of infection; the inflammatory response; the immune response; pathophysiology of infection; wound infections; sepsis; urinary tract infections; pneumonia; new and resurgent infectious diseases; the contribution of the nurse and the hospital laboratory in the identification of infectious diseases. The subject is taught by lectures, tutorials, and laboratory work.
