Issues in nursing 1: Perspectives and attitudes towards nursing

Objectives On successful completion of the subject it is expected that the student will be able to critically examine the historical development of nursing; demonstrate an understanding of the emergence and significance of the theoretical heritage within nursing; develop a basic insight into the phenomenon of caring; begin to develop skills in critical thinking and reflective practice; begin to understand the relationship between nursing practice and theory.
Synopsis This subject, undertaken by students in the undergraduate program, is an introduction to ideas fundamental to nursing. As an introductory subject, this part of the course aims to expose students to ideas, concepts and influences which make nursing a dynamic, caring profession committed to the welfare of people in need of nursing services. The subject has been designed to introduce the student to a critical examination of the historical development of nursing, and develop insights into the evolution of nursing from a national and international perspective. It introduces and encourages students to analyse critically and reflect upon selected contemporary issues and trends in nursing.
Assessment Written (1000 words, 1000 words and 1500 words): 30%, 30% and 40% respectively
