Public health policy and planning

Synopsis This subject aims to examine the policy processes, structures and planning processes in public health. During this subject students will cover the following areas. (a) Health policy. What is policy and policy making?; governmental institutions and their roles in public health; legislative processes and the participants in them; initiation and formulation of policy. (b) Planning. What is planning and what are the approaches in common use?; stakeholders and their role in public health planning; institutional imperatives in the planning process; strategies for influencing the development of public health plans. (c) Case studies. Analyses of public health plans and the planning at state, regional and local levels; processes of development; implementation and evaluation. Teaching will include lectures, tutorials and syndicate work.
