4.5 points
* 39 lecture hours, 26 tutorial hours
* First semester
* Gippsland/Distance
* Prerequisites: GEG1303, GEG1723, GAS1641, GAS1642

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamental aspects of structural deformations and stresses; to be able to perform simple stress analysis exercises; to acquire sufficient understanding of stress analysis to be able to apply it in a design situation; to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the analysis of simple friction based machine drives such as clutches and belt drives; a basic understanding of the method of analysis of geartrains; and an appreciation of the theory of operation of cams and cam followers.

Synopsis Structures section: introduction, stress-strain diagram, elasticity and plasticity, Hook's law, shear stress and strain; displacement of axially loaded members; torsion of circular bars, non-uniform torsion; shear force and bending moment relationships between load, shear force and bending moment; normal strains in beams, normal stresses in web of beams with flanges; differential equations of the deflection curve; buckling and stability, columns with pinned ends, columns with other support conditions. Machines section: plate clutches, cone clutches and centrifugal clutches; belt drives and band brakes - flat belt drives, V-belt drives, effect of centrifugal tension and initial tensions on belt drives; gear trains - simple gear trains, compound gear trains, epicyclic trains, cams and cam followers - design of cam profile for specified followers, displacement trajectory.
