Objectives To introduce the engineering design process through drawing and computer-aided drawing. To introduce the design process via a group project involving organisation, teamwork, communication, design.
Synopsis Drawing: projection of lines and surfaces, letters, numerals, scales; sketching and orthographic projections; projection and isometric drawing; sectioning; conventional representation of common features; dimensioning, fits and tolerance; detail and assembly drawing. CAD: introduction to CAD in the engineering workplace; use of CAD for 2-D and 3-D drawings; using CAD for 2-D and 3-D drawings; using CAD as a design tool; CAD exercises and design projects; participation in a group design project requiring exposure to elements of feasibility, scheduling, design, organisation, group communication and teamwork. Development of a simple prototype from concept to fabrication.
Assessment Assignments: 70%
