Objectives To understand how to plan a municipal water supply system including design of a treatment system; design sewage treatment systems; design solid waste collection systems; understand point source air pollution modelling; perform basic dissolved oxygen and pollution modelling in rivers, lakes and estuaries; and understand environmental impact assessment techniques.
Synopsis Water treatment; unit processes for various treatments, plant design. Wastewater treatment; unit processes for treatment of wastewater, aspects of plant design. Water supply design; planning and evaluating alternative sources of water supply. Solid waste disposal; characteristics, handling, landfill, incineration, environmental control. Atmospheric modelling: plume behaviour and regional models. Water-quality modelling: parameters, inputs, outputs, conservative modelling, lakes and streams. Environmental assessment.
Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 75% * Practical work: 25%
