Inelastic structures
R H Grzebieta
3 points * 20 lectures, 12 tutorials, 2 laboratory classes * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: CIV2221 or CIV2210
Objectives To develop knowledge in energy principles, critical load cases, yield conditions, redundancy and interaction of internal forces in regard to member capacity and to engender skills in determining these forces.
Synopsis Concept of virtual work; principle of virtual forces and virtual displacements; reciprocal theorems; dummy unit load method; influence lines; determination of moment and shear envelopes and application to design; theorems of plastic analysis, equilibrium condition; collapse mechanisms; yield condition; direct design methods; interaction of axial force, shear force and bending moment in cross-section strength; ductility requirements; plastic instability and inelastic column strength.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 75% * Laboratory and assignments: 25%
