Analysis of structures

Objectives The student is expected to develop qualitative analysis abilities, to understand that some structural systems can be represented as assemblies of discrete members and to understand the methodology for determining the elastic response of such systems to loads of both a static and dynamic nature. It is expected that skills will be developed for deriving member and structure stiffnesses, modelling loads on structures, representing boundary conditions, solving for actions and displacements, determining natural frequencies, assessing damping.
Synopsis Qualitative analysis. Direct stiffness method. Displacement transformation method. Member and structure stiffness. Load vectors. Solution techniques. Sources of structural vibration. Natural frequencies of single degree of freedom systems. Damping. Lumped mass modelling. Natural frequencies of multi degree of freedom systems. Acceptable levels of structural vibration.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% * Assignments: 30%
