Mechanical properties of materials

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic understanding of testing of materials, the chemical structure of polymeric, ceramic and metallic materials, the concepts of elasticity, plasticity and fracture in materials and their relationship to structures.
Synopsis Introduction to materials, mechanical properties, bonding in solids, structure of crystalline solids, plastic deformation, the yield strength and strengthening mechanisms, polymers, metallic and ceramic materials, composites, brittle fracture.
Assessment Examinations: 70% * Mid-semester test: 15% * Practical reports: 15%
