Environmental monitoring and sampling

Objectives The subject sets out to develop knowledge and understanding of the requirements and specific methodologies employed for sampling and monitoring in the air, water and soil environments; aims to provide direct experience, and skill development, in sample collection, sample handling, analytical procedures, and data analysis and interpretation; and aims to highlight the complexities and difficulties of generating adequate data upon which impact assessment and policy issues may be decided.
Synopsis Basis and requirements for environmental monitoring and sampling. Sampling strategies; specific methodologies for the air, water, and soil environments. Manual and automated instrumentation. Sample handling and treatment. Prescribed and standard analytical methods, sources of information. Use of statistics for developing sampling strategies. Statistical analysis and interpretation of data. Bioassays; rationale, strategies, test organisms, specific bioassays, interpretation of results.
