Energy systems

Objectives Students are expected to develop an understanding of the relationship between the abundance and cost of existing energy resources and their utilisation in practical energy conversion devices, to become familiar with renewable energy systems and to recognise their advantages and limitations, to gain confidence in the analysis of simple energy conversion systems using terms, measures and relationships developed in the stated prerequisite subjects as well as in other subjects in the course, to recognise available opportunities for co-generation and for hybrid energy systems. Individually and as a member of a group, students are expected to be able to synthesise appropriate energy systems for particular applications and to conduct self directed group investigations into energy conversion systems in the laboratory.
Synopsis Energy sources and resources including renewable energy. Major conventional systems of power generation and their optimal equipment including steam turbines, gas turbines and internal combustion engines. Energy generation from solar, small hydro, wind and wave including energy storage. Reversed cycles for heat pumping and refrigeration.
