Objectives The student is expected to acquire advanced knowledge of optical communication components, techniques for analysis and design of coherent and incoherent optical communication systems, internal and external modulation techniques for lasers, optical fibre transmission properties, optical amplification and receiving techniques, and applications in ultra-long and wavelength-division multiplexed optical communication networks.
Synopsis Modelling and simulation of optical communication components in the time and frequency domains, optical modulation and pulse generation, optical fibre dispersion and attenuation causing optical lowpass filtering, intersymbol interference caused by optical receiver noise, channel distortion, mode hopping and optical source spectral width; optical amplification, equalisation and signal processing; wavelength-division multiplexing and demultiplexing techniques; applications of optical communication systems.
