ECS4322

Microwave and mobile radio systems

J A Bennett

3 points * 18 lectures, 9 tutorial and laboratory hours * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ECS3321

Objectives The student is expected to gain a basic understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in free space, material media and guiding structures. The student is expected to be able to apply this understanding in a variety of situations involving practical radio communication systems.

Synopsis Plane wave solutions, the dispersion relation and wave polarisation in a variety of structures and media; radiation from current elements; free space Green's functions and the importance of Fourier transforms; antenna terms and definitions; some typical antennas; application to a variety of radio communication channels including point-to-point microwave and mobile channels.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 75% * Assignments and laboratory work: 25%
