Electrical and electronic design

Objectives Knowledge of basic building blocks of analogue electronics. Understanding of principles of design of electrical equipment.
Synopsis Design concepts and principles: the design process, use of computer-aided design packages, profitability as related to design, materials and manufacturing methods, standards and specifications. Electrical design: modes of heat transfer, heating and cooling of electrical equipment, cyclic loading. Design methods for equipment such as electromagnetic actuators, inductors, cables, busbars, protection, switching devices and switchboards. Safety considerations, SECV regulations. Electronic design: resistors, capacitors, inductors, relays, optocouplers. Component ratings, selection criteria. Thermal calculations, the thermal-electrical analogy, heat-sink calculations. Circuit board layout accounting for inductive and capacitative coupling, crosstalk, RFI and earthing. Use of manufacturers data books, application notes.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% * Practical work, laboratory work and seminar participation: 30%
