Mechanical engineering design 1

D Sheridan

4 points * 24 lecture hours, 28 design office/laboratory hours per semester * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: ENC1002 and ENC1301

Objectives To develop a basic understanding of the mechanical engineering design process.

Synopsis Machine design using stock machine elements and components (bearings, flexible couplings, gears, splines, belt and chain drives). Engineering drawing: surface texture symbols, tolerancing, standard components. Functional and spatial design through the use of layouts and assembly drawings. The design cycle of a product from the initial need through its design, manufacture, use and disposal; introduction to creative design. Influence of manufacturing processes on design. Force analysis, mathematical models, selection of materials and working stress, shock loads. Analysis and design of components, eg beams, shafts, keys, bolted and welded joints with central and eccentric loading.

Assessment Written: 50% * Examination (3 hours): 50%
