Engineering land surveying

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the methods of field measurement, recording reduction surveying data and procedures associated with simple engineering surveying.
Synopsis Introduction to surveying - chain surveying, principal equipment, procedure, book, step and slope chain field problems, corrections to and reduction of field measurements and source of errors. Introduction to levelling principles - use of levels. Booking and reduction of levels, adjustment of level, errors in levelling, application of levelling, use of theodolite and EDM. Traverse-angles, bearings, coordinate geometry, misclose, accuracy, reduction and adjustment with Bowditch rule. introduction to triangle problems and using trigonometric formulae. Solving a set out of circular, vertical and transition curves.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% * Fieldwork: 30%
