Timber structures

Objectives To develop in students the skill in the design of timber structures and a deep understanding of the material and structural theory which underpins design methods and research.

Synopsis Structural and stress grades, load duration factors, design of beams, columns, ties and connections. Mechano - sorptive behaviour, beam deflection, column buckling. Structural and clear timber, orthotropy, theories of failure, Hankinson's formula, bending theories, design properties from test data. Fracture mechanics, notches and defects. Plywood, orthotropic plate bending and buckling, thin walled timber member design. All students will complete an industrial portal frame design to Australian Standards.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 60% * Assignments: 40%
