Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the main musical forms, styles and repertoire from Australian Aboriginal and selected Pacific Island cultures; demonstrate familiarity with the main musical forms, styles and repertoire of music in Australia since white settlement; demonstrate familiarity with aspects of the social structure, history and cultural practices of the selected areas; distinguish aurally the different styles of music studied; demonstrate an understanding of form and style in the musics studied through participation in practical creative and recreative exercises.
Synopsis (1) Lectures: Unit 9 - Music of Aboriginal Australia and the Pacific Islands. A survey of the styles and repertoire of the indigenous peoples of Australia and the Pacific. Unit 10 - Australian music post-1788. Detailed studies of the important developments in music since the European settlement of Australia. (2) Creative workshop: as for EDN4403.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 30%
* Practical performance: 20%
* Examination: 50%
