Area studies in music: Asia

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the main musical forms, styles and repertoire from selected Asian cultures; demonstrate familiarity with aspects of the social structure, history and cultural practices of the selected areas; show an understanding of the influence of a culture in forming, preserving and changing musical traditions; distinguish aurally the different styles of music studied; demonstrate an understanding of form and style in the musics studied through participation in practical creative and recreative exercises.

Synopsis (1) Lectures: Unit 7 Area studies I - East Asia. An introduction to the musical forms, styles and repertoire in their own context. Unit 8 Area studies II - South-East Asia. An introduction to the musical forms, styles and repertoire in their own context. (2) Creative workshop: practical exercises related to the lectures designed to develop listening, creative and recreative skills.

Assessment Written (3000 words): 40%
* Practical performance: 20%
* Examinations: 40%
