Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic biological and environmental terms and concepts including the basic structure and operation of an ecosystem and the classification of Australian plants and animals; design and carry out scientific investigations; undertake simple measures of physical components of the environment; investigate and prepare a report on community attitudes to an environmental issue.
Synopsis The study of environmental problems is introduced and the scope and limitations of the human senses are examined. Some techniques for measuring environmental variables in the laboratory and field are applied to the study of selected environmental problems. The study of ecosystems is commenced and the major groups of Australian plants and animals are examined.
