Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have further developed elementary drawing, design and computer graphic skills; have developed skills in sculpture and elementary modelling and assemblage processes, using materials such as clay, wood, cement fondue, plastics and paper: be able to investigate painting processes, surfaces and their preparation, transparent and opaque techniques and various media including inks, gouache and acrylics; reflect and respond to visual art forms by developing aesthetic and conceptual awareness; have developed a knowledge of relevant terminology and learnt to carry out independent research on relevant artists and techniques.
Synopsis A range of technical and design processes involved in the construction of sculpture and painting are introduced. Students will be required to select one discipline. The study of sculpture will include an investigation of elementary modelling and assemblage processes, using materials such as wood, metal, paper, clay, cement fondue and plastics. The study of painting will include the elementary investigation of printing surfaces and their preparation, and the processes appropriate to transparent and opaque painting media such as inks, gouache and acrylics. Students will be expected to develop drawing and design expertise, including computer skills. The subject will examine art theory and practice through lectures and seminars, excursions to galleries and schools, leading to developing strategies appropriate for general classroom application.
