Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge, understanding and expertise in the ideas and materials produced by John Paynter, George Self, Brian Dennis and R Murray Schaffer; children improvising and composing in the classroom; repertoire of music written specifically for school children; the non-traditional methods of notating music; the classroom organisation of children's group compositional work; the assessment and evaluation of children's compositions; the rationale for implementation of a creative classroom music program; using any sound as the basis of a potential composition; using a range of sound sources as the basis of a composition; making aesthetic choices about sounds and their combination which confront composers.
Synopsis This subject aims to introduce students to recent approaches to creative classroom music as established by post-World War 2 music educationalists. Students will survey the ideas and materials produced by John Paynter, George Self, Brian Dennis and R Murray Schafer. Topics include composition in the classroom; improvisation; music written specially for children; non-traditional methods of notating music; the organisation of group work; the assessment and evaluation of children's composition and the implementation of creative music in the classroom.
Assessment Assessment will be based on student participation in group
compositions and performances: 40%
