Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an appreciation of the diversity of the world's musics; an understanding of the influence of a culture in forming, preserving and changing musical traditions; an understanding of ethnomusicological approaches to the study of music; an appreciation of the problems involved in teaching the music of a different culture; and familiarity with appropriate teaching strategies and resources.
Synopsis This subject introduces students to music from a number of world cultures, with emphasis on musical traditions which are practised in Melbourne. Ethnomusicological methods will be used to investigate music in its cultural context and to elucidate ways of teaching music in Australian schools. The subject will involve some musical performance by students and fieldwork with local musicians.
Assessment Practical project (performance and/or fieldwork): 40%
