Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of homeostasis and its importance to health, nutrition and metabolism; the energetics of exercise and weight control; muscles, bones and body movement; the effects of diet and exercise on the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
Synopsis This subject introduces students to the study of human physiology from the perspective of health and fitness. Topics to be covered include health and homeostasis; body fluids; food nutrients and their metabolism; the role of the liver in homeostasis; anaerobic and aerobic exercise; diet and energy balance; the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system; the structure and function of the cardiovascular system; the structure and function of the respiratory system, the immediate effects of exercise and physical training on body physiology; the effects of diet and smoking on body physiology and on the development of disease. The subject is taught by lectures, tutorials, and practicals.
Assessment Essay (1000 words): 20%
