Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an improved understanding of music notation, and the ability to read keyboard scores; perform simple pieces with technical and interpretative competence on the electronic keyboard or other approved instrument; demonstrate an understanding of the structure and relationships of the primary triads; perform accurately simple pieces and `changes' on a set of tuned handbells; arrange melodies for a small set of tuned handbells; demonstrate familiarity with a range of classroom and orchestral instruments; perform accurately and expressively in a class ensemble, showing an awareness of the role of the individual performer within the group; show a commitment to the cooperative nature of group performance.
Synopsis (1) Practical: as per EDN1285. (2) Handbells ensemble: a varied repertoire of music on tuned handbells is explored. Reading skills and an understanding of theory and musical form are developed through performance. (3) Instrumental workshop: voice, school, classroom and orchestral instruments are used to introduce students to appropriate repertoire (both Western and non-Western) from various styles.
Assessment Class test: 10%
