The course

The Graduate Diploma of Education (School Librarianship) - GradDipEd(S/Lib) - is designed for students with a degree and an approved teaching qualification or an equivalent in qualification and experience. The course is usually offered over two years part-time by distance education.

Objectives

The objectives of the GradDipEd(S/Lib) course are to provide students with:

• an appreciation of the developments of school librarianship and trends in information services and provision;
• a continuing interest in school librarianship;
• an understanding of the universally accepted principles of organisation of information resources for retrieval;
• a knowledge of computer systems for the management, organisation and provision of learning centre services, and be able to apply such knowledge in the working environment;
• competency to implement, direct and control resource allocation according to budgeted expenditure;
• skills to manage the work relationships of resource centre personnel;
• skills to provide leadership in the implementation of the School's programs and policies as a resource consultant;
• skills to work with the classroom teacher towards the development of independent learning skills so that the students can identify, select, locate, evaluate and utilise resources effectively;
• skills to provide guidance in library and resource use that is appropriate to the school environment;
• a wide range of education and information resources;
• skills to develop a commitment to professional associations and activities.

• GEC7250 Information needs and users
• GEC8614 Evaluation of software

Continuing enrolments (second year)

First semester

• GEC7250 Information needs and users
• GEC7260 Organisation of information

• GEC7270 Computer-supported information services
• GEC7700 Special topic in school librarianship

• GEC7290 School librarianship practicum
