Normally the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Education degree are each of three years' duration. When the degrees are taken in combination, students are able to complete both courses in four years full-time study at a normal course load for each year. A feature of this course is its interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of some subjects.
On completion of this degree, graduates are eligible for employment as a teacher. They may also consider employment in a wide range of occupations apart from teaching including journalism, publicity, writing and library services, research and administration. Opportunities also exist for further study which may lead to registration as a psychologist.
In keeping with the mission statement of Monash University, the major objectives of the course are to provide students with a program of studies and experiences which should enable them to:
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the Victorian Certificate of Education or its equivalent. Within the Victorian Certificate of Education, English must be included in the applicant's `best four' subjects and applicants must have satisfactorily completed any two units of VCE mathematics.
A candidate for the double degree must fulfil the following requirements to receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education:
(a) successfully complete subjects totalling 196 points;
(b) successfully complete major (three years' study in a single discipline) and minor studies (two years' study in a single discipline), and two additional first-year subjects within the disciplines offered by the Faculty of Arts;
(c) successfully complete at least one major sequence in education studies (forty-eight points) and a major sequence in teaching and curriculum studies including a teaching practicum (fifty-two points).
Students are referred to the subject descriptions in the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education handbooks for details of the subjects offered in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree.
