Systems analysis and design6 points

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know the processes of information systems analysis and design; understand how to apply systems analysis and design techniques and project management techniques in information systems development; be able to identify the opportunities and potential problems in the application of information systems to solve business problems; and appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of systems development techniques and of information systems as solutions to business problems.

Synopsis This subject covers the development of computerised information systems. A four-stage development process is explained: requirements determination, evaluation of alternative system solutions, design of chosen system and implementation. The detailed activities and deliverable products of each development stage are enumerated and any relevant techniques and tools are explained. In particular, system modelling tools and techniques are discussed at some length. In addition, the management of the development process is stressed. Management activities such as planning, monitoring, coordinating and reviewing are discussed. The impact on the development process of 4GL development environments and CASE tools is assessed. Examples and case studies are presented throughout to demonstrate and support the lecture material.
