Management issues in information systems

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know about the scope and role of information systems (IS) management; understand the strategic and competitive role of the IS department; understand the role the IS manager plays in managing the IS Department, end-user computing, essential technologies, electronic commerce and security; and value professionalism and ethical practice in computing.

Synopsis The subject deals with the management of information systems (IS). In particular the course covers the importance of IS management, the foundations, scope and role of IS management, IS as a competitive and corporate entity; strategic IS planning, IS department structures, controlling the IS department, duties of the IS department, managing IS personnel, management issues in systems development, managing essential and new technologies, supporting end-user computing, managing electronic commerce and security, professionalism, IT practice, values and ethics and current issues for IS management.

Assessment Examination: 60%
* Practical work: 40%
