Computer models for business decisions

Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the principles, techniques and applications of computer models in business and industry; be able to utilise decision-support systems based upon spreadsheets, project management, Monte Carlo simulation, forecasting, service levels and inventory control and financial modelling; and be able to use personal computer packages to carry out sensitivity analysis on a range of data.

Synopsis This subject deals with general applications of computer models in business and industry. Topics covered include computer spreadsheets, project management, operations research techniques and other decision support systems. Each topic is illustrated with a user-friendly computer package for use on a personal computer. Students will be taught to use computer models to carry out sensitivity analyses to allow a range of different outputs/inputs to be examined.

Assessment (first semester) Written (2000-word assignment plus figures and graphs): 30%
* Examination (2 hours): 70%

Assessment (summer semester) Three 6000-word assignments: 100%
