Objectives At the completion of this subject students should understand the basic features of computer algebra systems, and be aware of their capabilities and limitations; become a competent user of two particular computer algebra systems; be able to interpret the output of a computer algebra system; and be able to perform programming tasks in a computer algebra system.
Synopsis Features of symbolic computation systems. Introduction to DERIVE and Maple. Functions, graphs, differentiation, integration, sequences and series, and linear algebra using Maple. Maple programming language. Numerical methods using Maple.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70%
