Objectives On completion of this subject, students should understand and be able to apply the basic concepts of vectors and matrices; differentiation and integration; and elementary probability theory and statistics.
Synopsis This subject introduces the core concepts needed to apply mathematical analysis to issues in computing. The following topics are introduced. Vectors and matrices: vector algebra, the concept of vector space, matrix algebra, matrix inversion methods, application to linear systems. Calculus: real functions, limits and continuity, derivatives and basic integration methods, solution of elementary optimisation problems. Probability and statistics: elementary probability theory, random variables, probability distributions, expected value, mean and variance, introduction to statistical inference.
Assessment Examination (two hours): 85%
