The Bachelor of Business Studies has been developed to offer students flexibility in their business studies. Flexibility is offered in the degree structure which allows students to select up to eight electives from any area of university study, and in the study mode which allows students to complete the degree by open learning, distance education, on-campus study, or by a combination of these.
On completion of the course students should:
Students may select from a wide range of subjects but because not all subjects are taught by all modes of learning or on all campuses, students will need to consider this when selecting subjects.
Open learning allows students to study from home or from their workplace. Specially prepared study materials are sent to students, who are expected to complete regular assignments by mail. Study assistance is available from lecturers and advisers by phone.
Normally the only attendance requirement for open learning students is one three-hour examination for each subject held at the end of each semester. Examination centres are established throughout Australia so that no student should have to spend more than an hour and a half travelling to the nearest examination centre.
Television programs for many open learning subjects are broadcast in the mornings on ABC TV. Open learning is offered continuously throughout the year, so students may begin study by open learning in any of four study periods each year.
There are no formal academic prerequisites for open learning students wishing to study the Bachelor of Business Studies.
Bachelor of Business Studies students will be awarded the same amount of credit for previous studies as students of other degrees offered by the faculty, depending on their major. Thus, a Bachelor of Business Studies student who majors in accounting will be awarded as a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) student. Students should therefore refer to the relevant entry elsewhere in this handbook.
Students may chose subjects to form a second major sequence from other business subjects not listed in the core or the major study areas or with permission of the course coordinator, subjects from other disciplines.
The Bachelor of Business Studies comprises twenty-four subjects. Of the twenty-four subjects:
