management: people and organisations)
Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the management of people in organisational and environmental contexts within which people are managed; the practice of management placing particular emphasis on the strategic management of people in the private, public and not for profit sectors; the institutions which regulate the management of people; the practice of human resources management including training, selection and appraisal; the importance of leadership and motivation in the management of individuals and teams; the principles by which change is introduced to organisations.
Synopsis This subject is concerned with the management of people within organisations from a strategic viewpoint. It does this by looking at the systems and institutions within which organisations operate. It then considers the human resource management practices internal to the organisation but which flow from the external systems. Building on the above the day-to-day management of individuals and groups is examined in the private, public and not for profit sectors. Finally consideration is given to the principles and practices by which organisational change is introduced and managed.
Assessment Written (assignments 1000 words and 2000 words): 10% and 30%
