Introduction to management: managing organisations

* It is recommended that students complete MGC1020 (Introduction to management: managing organisations) prior to undertaking MGC1030 (Introduction to management: people and organisations)

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have an understanding of what an organisation is and how it operates; have an understanding of how organisations are managed; possess knowledge of basic theories of management and their historical development; understand the organisational context in which managers operate; identify the key factors in the external environment, economic, political, social, technical and cultural, that impact how managers operate and organisations operate; be able to apply analytical skills to a range of managerial and organisational issues.

Synopsis This subject is concerned with how organisations operate, the context in which they operate, and the factors which determine how managers can operate more effectively. Designed for students proceeding to further studies in management and also for students from other departments and faculties. The five main components are: the management function; the genesis of modern management; the development of management theory; the context in which managers operate; and managing organisations.

Assessment Written (assignments 1000 words and 2000 words): 10% and 20%
* Tutorial participation and preparation 10%
* Examination (2 hours): 60%
