Objectives To understand the changing nature and process of employee relations in Pacific Rim countries, the forces driving these changes and to facilitate a comparison of these country's systems within the Australian system.

Synopsis This subject will examine employee relations in a number of Pacific Rim economies including Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the USA and New Zealand. Comparisons will be undertaken with the Australian system. Australian managers need to understand the alternative approaches exhibited in these countries because of growing trends towards economic integration within the region. Employment regulation, labour costs, labour efficiency, skill formation, and unionism and employee representation in Australia's neighbours have ramifications and vital implications for Australian government and management. This subject should complement other subjects concerned with international management as well as other employee relations and human resource management subjects.

Assessment Written (4000-word assignment): 40%
