Objectives On completion of this subject students should be ready to undertake sound research in health economics; have knowledge of the major issues in health economics and the capacity to judge the importance of these issues; be able to function as independent professional health economist.
Synopsis The theme of the subject is the achievement of efficiency in the health sector. The first part of the subject builds on ECO4870 Health Economics. Alternative approaches to allocative efficiency, recent developments in the management of the market, and efficiency in hospitals are discussed. The second half of the course is devoted to aspects of evaluation techniques including recent developments in quality of life measurement, statistical issues, and modelling techniques.
Assessment Written (3000-word essay): 30%
* Oral presentation: 20%
* Examination (three hours): 50%
