Introduction to agribusiness

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be aware of the industries that comprise the agribusiness system; understand the linkages between these industries; appreciate the main issues faced by managers in the agribusiness sector.

Synopsis An introduction to the agribusiness system as a whole and an understanding of the linkages between the components of the system. Statistical description of the agribusiness sector; the organisation of the agribusiness channel; power relationships in the channel and an in-depth look at the production, processing and marketing of a selection of food and fibre products. Case studies are used to apply the ideas learnt in the core business subjects to agribusiness organisations.

Assessment Three assignments (2400 words): 24%
* Management game: 10%
* Short tests: 10%
* Participation: 6%
* Examination (3 hours): 50%
