Objectives On completion of this subject students should have developed an appreciation of the human resource management function and its potential contribution to organisational effectiveness; understand the influences, issues and underlying theories of current human resource management activities and practices; have acquired skills and knowledge in applying different human resource practices in either a specialist HRM role or as a line manager.

Synopsis The strategic importance of human resource management, human resource planning, job analysis, recruitment, selection, performance appraisal, training and development, job evaluation and remuneration, equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment, industrial relations, occupational health and safety, redundancy and retrenchment, and human resource auditing.

Assessment Tutorial participation: 10%
* Group tutorial presentation: 20%
* Major essay (3000 words): 30%
* Examination (3 hours): 40%
