Introduction to modern Latin America

Objectives By the completion of the subject, students are expected to have developed a basic understanding of the history and politics of contemporary Latin America, as presented in the prescribed texts and films; and of the relationship between society and the authors' personal history as reflected in their works.

Synopsis This subject explores a variety of texts and films of twentieth-century Latin American writers such as Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Carlos Fuentes and Luisa Valenzuela to illustrate the various literary, socio-political and economic factors that have changed the face of Latin America this decade.

Assessment Written (3000 words): 60%
* Examinations (2 hours): 40%
