Objectives On completion of this subject students should have obtained a clearer understanding of relationship between religion and society; acquired a set of social-theoretical perspectives useful for analysing religion; gained an appreciation of the functions of religious phenomena at both individual and society levels; come to a recognition of the impacts of culture and history on religious forms and practices.
Synopsis The `religious', `social' and `scientific'; religious persons and experiences; religious organisations and ideologies; religion and indigenity; religion and the state; sectarian religion; religious syncretism and social change.
Assessment Essay (2500 words): 40%
