Introduction to sociology II

Objectives Students in this subject can expect to develop enhanced understanding of sociological perspectives, theories and methods and how these are applied in analysing the social world; insights into sociological thinking on a range of specific issues of contemporary significance; deeper understanding of the research process in sociology; enhanced skills in studying and analysing particular social settings; an increasing sociological awareness generally.
Synopsis Introduction to further substantive issues of sociological significance. Introduction to research. The nature and relevance of sociological perspectives. Substantive areas will be drawn from mass media, racism, education, work, youth, religion and the body. Overview of the research process; introduction to research design; observation and description of a social setting.
Assessment Essay and tutorial presentation (2000 words): 40%
