Objectives Students in this subject can expect to develop a sociological awareness and an understanding of some important contemporary issues; an understanding of the processes and structures that influence the relationship between the individual and society; an understanding of the use of sociological concepts and perspectives in social analysis; an understanding of the research process in sociology.
Synopsis Introduction to sociology. The nature of sociology - some of the basic concepts, perspectives and methods that sociologists use. The processes and structures that affect the way in which individuals become members of society. The structure of modern society. Some contemporary social issues. Concepts and institutions examined include socialisation and culture, family and marriage, women and society, and deviance and social control.
