Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking the subject should have a basic knowledge of Javanese gamelan and vocal music, dance and theatre terminology, concepts, performance techniques and history; and a framework to identify, categorise and assess selected styles.
Synopsis This introductory subject acquaints students with the basic theory and practice of Javanese gamelan (instrumental and vocal music) and theatre. It includes the study of ensembles, tuning systems, notation, musical structure and form, basic performance practice, the sociology of performance, and the history and cultural context of the performing arts.
Assessment Essay (1500 words): 25%
* Written/oral assignments: 15%
* Performance assignments and concert: 30%
