Objectives Students must complete boths parts 1 and 2 (CHI2480) in order to develop: (1) the ability to speak Mandarin fluently and accurately; (2) the ability to transcribe Chinese characters in pinyin, (3) the oral/aural ability for formal and informal modes of communication across a range of social and business contexts; (4) the ability to write formal correspondence using appropriate business vocabulary; (5) a knowledge of mainland Chinese business practices.
Synopsis Mandarin: (1) phonetic system and phonology; (2) the pinyin romanisation system; (3) the simplified character system.
Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 30%
* In-class weekly continuous
assessment on a pass or fail basis: 40%
* Homework, oral: 30%
