Objectives Students must complete both parts 1 and 2 (CHI1480) in order to develop: (1) the ability to speak Mandarin fluently and accurately, (2) the ability to transcribe Chinese characters in pinyin, (3) the oral/aural ability for formal and informal modes of communication across a range of social and business contexts, (4) the ability to write formal correspondence using appropriate business business vocabulary, (5) a knowledge of mainland Chinese business practices.
Synopsis Mandarin: (1) phonetic system and phonology; (2) the pinyin romanisation system; (3) the simplified character system.
Assessment Weekly oral/aural exercise: 40%
