Objectives Students should develop an awareness of the major issues relating to the development of the Australia-Japan relationship; an understanding of how since the 19th century, popular images and stereotypes of Asians have served to fuel fears of an Asian influx; a familiarity with economic realities of Australia-Japan relations; and an understanding of the growing social and cultural dimensions of the relationship, following the wartime experience.
Synopsis This subject examines economic, strategic and cultural aspects of the Australia-Japan relationship from an historical perspective, looks at major issues relating to the development of the Australia-Japan relationship: nineteenth-century fears of an Asian influx; an unwelcome ally during World War I; growing trade ties in the period leading up to World War II; the wartime experience of Australians; Australia's role in the Allied occupation of Japan; postwar resources diplomacy; Japan's emergence as Australia's major trading partner; and the ramifications of the MFP.
