Objectives Students should develop familiarity with a number of topics pertaining to linguistics and the ability to critically review an empirical study.
Synopsis This subject is an introduction to the linguistic study of Japanese and deals with a selected number of topics from different areas of language, including Japanese linguistic behaviour in contact situations. Topics include loan words, honorifics, speech acts, Japanese script, reference and address terms, and others.
Assessment Project (3000 words): 50%
* Review (1000 words): 10%
* Examination (2 hours) 40%
* Third-year students will be expected to
complete work of a higher standard.
