Culture core: the Age of Goethe II

Objectives. The aims of the subject are to enable students to gain an understanding of a key period in German culture and literature with reference to the relation between the individual and society; to develop their capacity to analyse and critically evaluate representative literary texts of the period in the light of the search for personal identity. GRN2045 together with GRN2035 comprises the second year of the major sequence in German literature and culture which consists at first year level of an introduction to the study of literature and an overview of German literature since the 18th century followed by the close study of two key periods of German literature, classicism and Romanticism and twentieth-century literature (second and third year).

Synopsis GRN2045 will examine German literature between 1800 and the 1830s through the study of selected texts

Assessment Examination (1 hour): 40%
* Seminar paper: 20%
* Essay (1500 words): 40%
